From Solopreneur to 10+ Employees – The Lawson House Story
If you would have asked me 4 years ago if I thought I would be a business owner – I would have shrugged and said, “That could be fun!”
I had no idea that in the blink of an eye, I’d be starting a marketing agency, leading a team of 10+, and working with hundreds of businesses all over the world.
While I typically don't talk about my personal business growth. Recently I’ve gotten the question of, “How did you get started?” enough to where I wanted to share 3 things I believe have been pivotal to helping me turn a business idea into a real, successful business that serves many of you.
So for the first time ever, here are my 3 biggest pieces of business advice for anyone looking to scale a business and grow a brand.
My THREE Biggest Pieces Of Business Advice
1 – Be Prepared To Pivot
What is now Lawson House was actually born out of my previous 9-5 job going squirrely and me needing to create an exit strategy – fast.
You could say I have been pivoting from day 1 in that sense, and I feel that although stressful, it has served my business.
I’ve taken courses on web development, upleveled my branding skills, surrounded myself with experts in their fields, and learned new skills when a client had a need we had not served before.
This willingness to pivot and adapt will get you a long way in business, so if that’s a skill you’re uncomfortable with – I invite you to start flexing that muscle as soon as possible.
2 – Have A Clear Message
Although my branding has shifted many times, our central message has always been clear. We believe it’s just plain wrong that most businesses feel totally overwhelmed and confused when it comes to their marketing.
We’re here to take marketing off your to-do list and help you grow a successful business without all the stress marketing brings on.
I know exactly how I help my customers and how we make their lives better. My team knows that, too.
Having that clear North Star is what’s set us apart and helped us continue growing even when pivots happen on a micro level.
3 – Walk Before You Run
Might sound cheesy, but hear me out. Most business “gurus” out there tell you about the importance of hiring fast, building a scalable product, and having a super-dialed-in offer from day 1.
That’s not how I built Lawson House.
For the first several years I was a team of one – with a part-time assistant and a handful of contractors I would request support from. I’ve consistently tailored our offering to what supports our customers the most. I didn’t have a full-time team operating in the business until last year.
Most people think you need to have it all figured out on day 1. I completely disagree. Be scrappy, make pivots as you go, and don’t be afraid to get it wrong a few times. That’s where you’ll learn.
